DERMATOLOGY AND
VENEREOLOGY IN MOULAGES
ATLAS.

The Atlas
"Dermatology and venereology in moulages" ha been
prepared by the staff of the department of skin and venereral
diseases of the I. M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy and is the first publication of this
kind to make the collection of the unique museum available to the
general public. The Atlas is published to mark three occasions:
the 125th anniversary of the first in Russia department of skin
and venereal diseases, the centenary of Russia's first clinic of
skin and venereal diseases and the centenary of Russia's
first-moulage museum. At the very beginning the department,
clinic, and museum were divisions of the Moscow Emperor
University, later renamed the M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State
University, the First Moscow Medical Institute and at present
they are integral parts of the I. M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy. Over 300 colour photographs of
moulages from the unique collection are published in the Atlas.
The museum possesses 1299 exhibits made by the Fiveiskys, a
dynasty of artists- modelers. The importance of moulages as
visual aids in teaching skin and venereal diseases cannot be
over-estimated. They are second only to reality. The Atlas
contains pictures of both wide-spread and rare dermatoses which
were observed in the clinic during its century- long history. The
pictures are supplied with legends in Latin Russian and English.
The main sections of the Atlas begin with articles on the history
of the department and the moulage museum. The authors hope that
the Atlas, "Dermatology and venereology in moulages"
will be a valuable diagnostic aid both to practicing
dermatologists and venereologists and to those working at the
research and educational institutions, as well as to clinicians
of other specialities and medical students.
